Spring | Summer 2024.
‘Soanyway’ Issue 16
A contribution of six collage works on paper to peer reviewed online journal on the theme of Ekphrasis & Prosopopoeia: Mapping, Interpreting and giving Voice.

David Osbaldeston. Imposters 1-6. Six collages, oil on paper, mixed media.

Ekphrasis & Prosopopoeia: Mapping, Interpreting and Giving Voice. Ekphrasis – a vivid description of a scene or work of art. Mediums converge: one medium of art is related and relayed in another.  Prosopopoeia – an abstract thing is personified, or an absent or imagined person or thing is represented as speaking. The artist, writer, singer gives voice to an animal or an inanimate object. In an interdisciplinary art setting, who speaks for who, what speaks to what, who borrows whose voice? How does one form describe another, how is an image or idea translated across mediums, contexts and languages?

Oil paint on collage for the group exhibition I WISH…held at Shandy Hall. The Laurence Sterne Trust, Coxwold, Yorkshire, over the summer of June - August 2023.

Better known as originator of the comic novel The Life and opinions of Tristram Shandy, and beginning with ‘I Wish…’ Sterne’s novel delivers engaging textual ploys to convey graphic interplay between image and text. Arguably it achieves this with an immediacy of effect that insists on reminding the reader they are engaging with a highly convoluted narrative delivered through the lens of Sterne as one of the earliest proponents of meta-fiction; where the boundaries between author and character are blurred.

This work is now in a private collection.

David Osbaldeston
'A Pastiche of Different Techniques'

Wednesday 23 November 2022
6.00pm and 9:00pm

The exhibition will run from
24 November 2022 to 25 January 2023

For his exhibition at Moon Grove, artist David Osbaldeston has created a suite of site-specific works for the gallery’s intimate domestic location. Spread between the building’s ground floor rooms, entrance, staircase and first floor landing, Osbaldeston’s prints and paintings dwell on contemporary criticism associated with Nietzsche’s ‘Eternal Return[ii]’, alongside bourgeois elements of taste associated with Modernism and philosophical aesthetics development since the Enlightenment.
